South African red wines are globally acclaimed and probably best known for their Bodeaux styled blends – conceived by Meerlust with its now famous Rubicon label.
The section Cabernet Sauvignon Blends lists 13 blends headed by the Sadie Family´s “Columella” with 95 Wine Spectator Points. Other top blends include Rust & Vrede Estate (WS 92) De Toren Fusion V (WS 93) and Ernie Els (WS 94).
Shiraz & Syrah wines are also a firm favourite and this selection includes the other 95 Point Wine Spectator wine – De Trafford Shiraz.
Only 2 South African wines – The Columella & De Trafford Shiraz have ever gained 95 points from the American based Wine Spectator judges.
Pinotage of course is now virtually exclusive to South Africa – being an original cross between Pinot Noir & Hermitage in 1925 - & our top of the range is the Kanonkop Pinotage given a rating of 17 by Revista de Vinhos – with a closing caption – "what a pleasant surprise!"
It took until 1991 at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London for Pinotage to be trully acknowledged and in that year the Kanonkop Pinotage was awarded the Robert Mondavi trophy for the Best Red Wine and the then wine maker Beyers Truter the Wine Maker of the Year.
Kanonkop have recently announced the release of its 10 year Old Pinotage & a very limited “Black label” release.
